Frequently Asked Questions
What is “neti” ?
The Sanskrit word « neti » means « to guide » and in this case refers to a technique where a warm salt water solution is used to cleanse the nasal passages.
Who can benefit from doing neti?
Here’s a simple experiment. Breath deeply through both nostrils then one at a time. Do you feel a blockage or reduction in air flow on either side. If so, you can benefit from doing neti.
And what is a neti pot/lota?
The neti pot (lota) is a tool specially designed in the last 30 years or so to facilitate cleansing of these passages. It offers you a simple tool to irrigate your nose with a salt water solution.
Where does the water go?
The water goes into first nostril and into the firstt nasal passage around the septum (the part dividing the nose into two). It then flows into a cavity called the nasopharynx (which the two nasal passages open into and which is connected to the throat). Afterwards, the water flows into the other nasal passage and out of the other nostril. If nostrils are v. blocked the flow might be slow & restricted but continue to do neti in both nostrils.
Why use salt in nasal irrigation/for neti?
The reason you put the salt in the solution is so that it’s around the same saltiness as the solution you have in your body. Consequently, when you pour it through your nostrils, you won’t even notice – it’s to have the same sort of effect as the liquid in your body.
Salt also has antiseptic properties. It’s one of those substances that has been used for thousands of yrs to fight infection.
What type of salt do you use?
Fine sea salt/ rock salt – I prefer sea salt but rock salt is fine too. Basically one that is non-iodized.
Are there other substances you can put in the solution other than salt ?
You can add various herbal decoctions to your neti solution but it’s good to understand why you’re adding something before you add it. David Frawley’s book “Neti” (see right-hand column) goes into this technique in more detail.
How often should you use it?
On a regular basis, ideally every day – just as you wash yourself on the outside and clean your teeth it’s good to clean your nostrils. The best time is each morning when you brush your teeth, to integrate it into your daily routine.
What sort of diet should I have when I have a cold to improve the efficiency of neti?
A low mucus forming diet is best. This involves avoiding dairy products and drinking very cold drinks, especially with your meals. For further ideas of light meals, consult my book “Plans for Dinner?” (see right-hand column).
How long will they last for?
Your lota can last for years if you look after it. I’ve been using my current one for over two years practically every morning.
I want to buy a neti pot. Do you accept credit cards?
Yes, there is now the option to pay via Paypal or as well as at the Post Office.
